Markelon Tops WMX Round Five at Muddy Creek Raceway
Kylie Fasnacht Holds Six Point Lead in WMX Championship
Blountville, Tenn. (June 10, 2015) – Marissa Markelon claimed her second consecutive win of the season in the Women’s Motocross Championship Series at round five of the series this weekend at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tennessee, the Team Green Kawasaki rider went 2-1 to beat out current series points leader Kylie Fasnacht, who posted a 3-2 for second overall.
With the win, Markelon drew to within six points of the Team Green Kawasaki rider in the series standings, setting up an exciting battle for the title with just three rounds remaining on the schedule.
Markelon and Fasnacht kicked off their battle in the opening moto of the day, fighting back and forth over second place while Yamaha rider Mackenzie Tricker ran out front. Markelon finally took over the runner-up slot for good, as Tricker eventually came home with the first moto victory, with Markelon in second and Fasnacht in third.
“Mackenzie rode a good race in that first moto, and I think Kylie (Fasnacht) and I held each other up with the battle that we were having,” said Markelon. “Muddy Creek is a tough track to pass on because there are a lot of off-cambers and that slowed us a bit. You have to respect that track, you can’t ride too aggressively on it.”
The same three players led the first few laps of moto two, with Markelon passing Tricker for the lead at mid-race, while Fasnacht took over second a few laps later when Tricker suffered mechanical problems.
At the finish it was Markelon with the win, followed by Fasnacht and Kaitlyn Morrow on a Yamaha, giving Markelon the overall win, followed by Fasnacht. Morrow landed in third overall with a 5-3 performance. Meanwhile, Shelby Rolan (4-4) and Amanda Brown (6-5) rounded out the top five.
With five rounds in the books, Fasnacht leads the series standings with 222 points, followed by Markelon with 216, and Marrow with 170.
“We’re getting down to the end of the series and I think that’s when I feel like I do my best – that’s when I typically come on strong,” said Markelon. “I think Mackenzie is out of the running with her DNF, but it’s going to be an exciting finish between me and Kylie.
Round six takes place on June 12th at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA. For more information on the WMX series check out http://racewmx.com.
